Submit your work for consideration in Verses From The Underground
GUIDELINES
We accept work via email or through the form below.
If you would like to submit your work via post mail, please send us an email to request guidelines.
If your work contains special formatting please submit a pdf or word doc.
Email: VersesFTU@gmail.com
You may submit up to 5 pieces per month.
We do not provide unsolicited feedback regarding rejections.
We accept short format poetry (preferred maximum line count: 55). Any genre.
Due to page sizing restrictions, it is unlikely we will accept a poem over 55 lines.
However, all work will be reviewed.
We tend to lean away from confessionalist style. We generally accept work that indicates a love of poetry for poetry’s sake—not those who intend to use poetry as means of expressing any specific opinion, but rather those that write due to their interest with words themselves, their meanings, sounds, derivations and relations. Any piece expressing a specific opinion or stance will never be judged by the merit or righteousness of its offered perspective, it will be accepted or denied only by the merits of its poetic proficiency and effectiveness.
Succinctly, we DO NOT CARE what your poem is about, but we DO CARE if it is written well.
We will make exceptions for anything— as long as it's good.
By submitting your work (via email or website), you agree:
You are 18 years of age or older.
We do not accept submissions from minors. There are many other literary magazines that WILL accept your submission. You can find a list of them HERE. We look forward to reading your work in a few more years...
No Artificial Intelligence (AI)
All content must be your own intellectual property. We do not consider work that has been written, generated, created, or inspired in part or in full by AI.
If accepted:
We may make minor edits to your work to match our style & formatting. E.g.) Font, font size, and spacing. We aim to match formatting as closely as possible to how a piece is submitted.
If you are not local to Philly, we'll send you a contributor's copy on release day.
We exclusively publish in print. Anywhere from 300-500 copies may be initially printed and distributed. We may print and distribute additional copies of the Issue containing your work after the initial publication month. We may also include your work in a future Verses retrospective.
Current “wait time” for review:
2-3 months
“Please remember the following:
If you think your poetry is bad, submit it. I’m happy to read it. I respond to everything. And,
If you think your poetry is good… it’s probably bad, but submit it. I’d still love to read it.”
